Coldest Night of the Year Sponsored Walk

Right now, there are more than 150,000 Canadians experiencing homelessness and thousands more teetering on the edge. They are men and women, families and kids, businessmen and mothers and students. Some were abused, abandoned and ignored. And some were just left behind, broken by the recession, by their choices, and by life. Homelessness as a condition embraces a wide range of economic and social factors that include poverty, housing, substance abuse, unemployment, discrimination, mental health and social support.
In each community where the WALK is hosted, CNOY partners with one well-known 'homeless' charity with a proven, committed history of service to the hungry, homeless and hurting in their town.
Walking in February is particularly helpful because volunteerism and contributions are at a peak around the Christmas holiday season and then slows down afterward, so that by February - the coldest month of the year - resources have dwindled. It's the perfect time to come together to restock the balance sheet while refocusing on the needs while winter wears on.
ICCS's Statement of Purpose is: “To provide shelter and care for those in need, reflecting the love of God in loving one another.” We have been hands of care in the heart of the island since 1989 through Samaritan House, Nanaimo's only homeless shelter for women; Crescent House, Safe Harbour House and Hirst House (Parksville), which are crisis stabilization homes; and The Bridge which is a supportive recovery home.
Walk with us to show Nanaimo that we care about the homeless and those in crisis! Go to www.coldestnightoftheyear.org to register as a team or an individual walker!
