Coastal Giant and Clay Ravens perform at Copper Owl on January 23.

Coastal Giant first formed as a duo on SaltSpring island including guitarist/ vocalist, Brad Smith and guitarist, Orion Marcano. Quickly deciding to expand their sound by incorporating a backline, came drummer Yoshi Konomoto and bass player Spencer Field. Since playing the bands first couple years as a four piece it was apparent that the band needed some change and a new sound. In early 2015 Coastal Giant brought on a new drummer Luke Cuthbert.

Clay Ravens
Founded upon the guttural, honey-smoked harmonies of their vocal blend; Clay Ravens began as a singer-songwriter project between two siblings: Justin and Brianna Smith.

Their songs lent themselves to a more complex sound, so the band needed growth. With each new contributor came an unexpected twist to the original vision.

Incorporating Kelsey Butkus’s punk/metal technical bass skills, Brendan Tydall’s shredding twang electric guitar style, Matt Cook-Contois’s legendary fiddle chops and Eric Bryngelson’s third line shuffle, the band has formed an extremely unique folk-Americana sound. http://www.clayravens.com
