10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Join Chepximiya Siyam Chief Janice George and Skwtsimeltxw Buddy Joseph in a full day Crafternoon session on Coast Salish Weaving at Nanaimo Museum.

Coast Salish blankets were traditionally woven for special ceremonies and events, steeped in positive thoughts and prayers for the recipient. The knowledge of this traditional practice was lost in the wake of residential schools. Janice and Buddy learned from Susan Pavel, a master weaver in Washington State, and were able to teach others in time to weave blankets for the Squamish representatives to wear in the Opening Ceremonies at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Janice and Buddy have embraced their roles as teachers, having opened L’hen Awtxw Weaving House in Squamish Territory in Vancouver, and teaching First Nations and non-Indigenous people how to weave since 2003.

In this 6-hour session, participants will learn about the history and traditions of Coast Salish weaving, techniques, and Janice and Buddy’s personal and family weaving stories. Participants will create a weaving of their own to take home at the end of the day.
