Classical Chamber Music

Three exceptional pieces, drawn from a Suppressed Music recording project supported by both UVic and the Jewish Federation of Victoria and Vancouver Island, will be performed.

As none of the composers are presently “household names”, here is a brief introduction: Leo Smit (1900-1943) completed this jazz influenced Sonata (his last work) for flute and piano two months before he was deported to a concentration camp, where he was killed three days later.

This Sonata's impressionistic harmonic language and elegant virtuosity offers flutists a fresh alternative to the standard French salon pieces. During the Third Reich era, Boris Blacher (1903-1975) was a political dissident and a student of Hindemith. A lightness and humour pervades the outer movements, while a delicate lyricism characterizes the sombre centre movement of this Sonata (written in 1940).

The final work on the program, Jan van Gilse (1881-1944) Trio for flute, viola and violin, is technically challenging, melodically rich and quite exciting! Van Gilse was a Dutch composer who was active in the resistance during WWII; the Third Reich attempted to destroy his work. Fortunately this extraordinary work survived.

Violinist Aaron Schwebel (Concertmaster National Ballet of Canada) violist Keith Hamm (Principal Violist Canadian Opera Company), and pianist Yoomi Kim (Victoria Conservatory Faculty Member) will be joining Suzanne Snizek (UVic Flute Professor). Admission is by donation.
