Professor Margalit Finkelberg (Tel Aviv University) will present a lecture entitled "Memory or Forgetfulness? Aegean Prehistory and Greek Heroic Tradition."

Nobody today would deny that at any given moment historical myth functions as a cultural artefact representative of the period in which it circulates rather than the one which it purports to describe. The myth of the Trojan War disseminated by Greek heroic tradition was no exception. Since the commemoration of the Late Bronze Age past in which this tradition specialized was meant to meet needs and expectations of the audiences of considerably later epochs, the old and the new co-existed in it alongside each other, often making it impossible to distinguish between them. Yet, this ought not to be taken to mean that, as is sometimes implied, the transformation of memory was total or that Greek epic tradition preserved nothing of the past that it claimed to celebrate. It would be anachronistic to approach traditional narratives with modern criteria of historicity and to deny them all historical basis on these grounds. Like any other tradition, Greek tradition encoded events of the past in a special way, preserving some things and erasing others, thereby both commemorating the past and making it usable.
