Professor David Kennedy (Winthrop Professor, School of Humanities, University of Western Australia) will present a lecture entitled The 'Works of the Old Men' in Arabia. Exploring and Mapping a Prehistoric Landscape from the Air and from Space.

Through the integration of aerial photography and high-resolution satellite imagery on virtual globes like Google Earth, the shapes and character of thousands of pre-Islamic stone structures, largely invisible from the ground, can now be traced. In this lecture, David Kennedy, Winthrop Professor at the University of Western Australia, will explain how an aerial reconaissance programme centred on Jordan is providing a rich dataset, revealing a cultural continuum across the huge and largely desert area encircled by the Fertile Crescent in the north and developments along the seaboard of the Arabian Peninsula in the south.

The Classical Association of Vancouver Island is UVics organization for people interested in the Greek and Roman worlds. Monthly lectures by local and international scholars take place at UVic. Everyone is welcome.
