Fifth meeting of the 18-19 academic year; Trevor Van Damme (Instructor, UVic) will present a lecture entitled:
“Athens before Athena?”
This talk examines the transformation of the Athenian acropolis from a Mycenaean citadel to the focus of cult in ancient Athens. Research integrates the study of textual evidence (Linear B texts from Knossos, Homer, and Herodotos) with an analysis of the stratigraphy and deposition of material thrown off the Acropolis onto the North Slope, tentatively associated with the reorganization of the Acropolis around 700 BC. A detailed analysis of ceramic finds offers new insights into changes in both daily life and cult practices in early Athens.
The Classical Association of Vancouver Island is UVic’s organization for people interested in the Greek and Roman worlds. Monthly lectures by local and international scholars take place at UVic. Everyone is welcome. To join CAVI and be on our mailing list, please send your name, contact information (address/email), and membership dues (10$/year, cheques payable to CAVI):
