A Vancouver Islander at heart, now a Toronto dwelling singer songwriter, CLAIRE COUPLAND effortlessly pulls her audience into her personal world of love and life experiences, but always with a touch of her “wicked sense of humour” (Rik Emmett, Triumph). Influenced by folk/rock artists growing up and a degree in Contemporary Music performance, she blends her own style of intricate guitar playing and jazz influenced melodies, progressions and arrangements. With the vocal power of Susan Tedeschi paired with the velvety softness of Eva Cassidy, she brings her warm, approachable west coast charm to the stage and a graceful contemporary feel to indie folk music. She is known for her ability to “transport her listeners to another world” with her pure, clear voice, and dynamic, passionate performances; her music and personable performance approach is easily enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

Once paralyzed by the fear of showing her songs to anyone else, Claire was encouraged to cultivate her love of songwriting and self expression, with help from mentors such as Rik Emmett and Sienna Dahlen during her Contemporary Music Degree at Humber College, Toronto. Coupland has since independently written three studio EPs, her latest, reaching #3 in the National Folk/Roots/Blues charts in Canada with earshot! Receiving steady CBC Radio airplay across the country, “On The Other Side” earned Claire her first song writing nomination (“Love In Your Eyes”, Ontario Arts Council), and has received praise and glowing reviews from music magazines, blogs, and radio stations in the US, UK and Europe.

A BC born and raised musician, she has been touring Canada heavily since 2016, already appearing in festivals from coast to coast, such as The Filberg Festival, Whoop & Hollar Festival, Living Roots Festival, Harmony Arts Festival and Springtide Festival. Since 2016, she has completed 6 journeys across the country as VIA Rail Artist On Board, was selected for the Singer Songwriter Residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts, was a featured writer for Humber Music's Producer In Residence Week with Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel), and has showcased at Folk Music Ontario and Folk Alliance International. She has also loaned her talent to non profit organizations such as Girls Rock Camp Toronto, Nellie’s Shelter and Souper Bowls Of Hope.

Claire has also led an interesting life: She worked in Crete as a sea turtle tagger and activist, worked repairing Medieval roads in southern France, lived in Europe as a child for a year and a half on a canal boat and an RV, and was a teaching assistant at a Quaker school in England. She has many stories…and many more to tell… She is currently in writing/pre-production for her second full length album.
