Steven Herbert will change the way you think of Seattle. In his upcoming City Talk lecture, The Battles in Seattle: Paradoxes of Social Control
in a Seemingly Progressive City, Herbert argues that the mild-mannered and left-leaning city is not quite what it seems. This is the second of the City Talk series on Security in the City.
Herbert will discuss the dimensions of social control in Seattle. As the first city to create a no protest zone and the first to criminalize
sitting or laying down on a downtown sidewalk, Seattle is decidedly less progressive than its reputation suggests. With the recent overhaul of Seattles police department, the city has become a site for the creation of effective methods of social control.
Herbert, who is a Professor of Geography at the University of Washington, gives his talk at the Legacy Art Gallery on February 24th, 7:30pm
