In our post-9/11 cities, does the increased level of public surveillance signal a fear of terrorist attacks, or something completely different? In his upcoming City Talks lecture, David Murakami Wood will tackle just that. He will discuss London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo in this lecture, which is the first of a new series of City Talks lectures called Security in the City.
This lecture draws on several years of research in the megacities and surveillance capitals of the world. Murakami Wood, who has a particular interest in the globalization of urban surveillance, is the Canada Research Chair in Surveillance Studies and Associate Professor at Queens University. His talk, titled Security in the City: Is Everywhere Under Surveillance? Views from London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, takes place on January 23, and will be food for thought for citizens of Victoria.
The free downtown UVic public presentations are held the third Thursday of the month from September to March at UVics Legacy Art Gallery. The format includes a Q&A session.
