8 PM (Doors open 7:30pm)

In what has become a Victoria tradition, John Reischman and the Jaybirds are fluttering into town for their 5th Annual Christmas Concert and Benefit.

The show has moved to the larger confines of Cordova Bay United Church, but you can expect the usual intimate performance, stunning instrumentals and soaring harmonies from these masters of acoustic music.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the music, John Reischman is one of the acoustic world's top-ranked mandolin players and composers, renowned for his exquisite taste, tone and impeccable musicianship. He is revered for his ability to play genres ranging from bluegrass to jazz to hot swing to Latin and beyond.

John, now living in Vancouver, toured and recorded for many years with California's eclectic Good Ol' Persons playing traditional and contemporary bluegrass and acoustic music, and helped define the groundbreaking new acoustic instrumental scene as a member of the Tony Rice Unit with appearances on the band's groundbreaking Rounder albums Still Inside and Backwaters.

The Jaybirds are four musicians renowned in their own right: Jim Nunally, guitarist, vocalist, composer and producer from the San Francisco Bay Area; Trisha Gagnon on bass and vocals from Chilliwack, BC; Nick Hornbuckle, from Nanaimo, on 5- string banjo, and from Spokane, Greg Spatz on fiddle.

The band has accumulated several European and North American tours, five critically acclaimed albums, two Juno nominations and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. Like the mandolinist at its helm, the group fashions a stylish, elegant take on bluegrass that is at once innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned, yet unselfconsciously new. Their live show has a genial blend of story-telling and side-show humor behind their studied performance of original songs, instrumentals, and freshly arranged traditional material.

$5 of every ticket sold will be donated to Our Place Society.

This show is a co-production of Sooke River Bluegrass Festival and Victoria Bluegrass Association.
