Raised in a musical family, Chris Botti was an early fan of jazz trumpet, especially the ballads of Miles Davis. Blessed with a velvet tone and exquisite phrasing, Botti began his professional career with a five-year stint playing for Paul Simon, followed by gigs with Joni Mitchell, Marc Cohn, Natalie Merchant, and Sting. Since 1995 he has recorded more than a dozen solo CDs, earning five Grammy nominations and numerous number-one spots on the Billboard charts. A fluent instrumentalist and inspired performer whose on-stage charisma is unrivaled, he has long been one of the most beloved performers of contemporary jazz. Botti has twice been a headliner at Victorias JazzFest, but returns to the Royal to present his acclaimed orchestral show with the Victoria Symphony. Im in awe whenever I hear him because hes such an amazing musician and musical personality, says Mitchell Krieger, executive director of the Victoria Symphony. Ive only seen his symphonic stuff on DVD and cant wait to hear him live, he adds. The VS players are virtuosic themselves, and this will be a great match.
