Working with a Japanese Art Paper called "masa paper", which is thinner than your regular 140lb watercolour paper, you will working with dry paper techniques as opposed to wet on wet. The main technique will be learning how to apply different brush pressure to create different impressions.

The fee of $120 per person includes your admission to all three classes in this workshop series over consecutive weeks on the following dates:

Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 1pm-3:30pm

Wednesday, August 27, 2025, from 1pm-3:30pm

Wednesday, September 3, 2025, from 1pm-3:30pm

SUPPLY LIST

For those who would prefer to rent supplies from the instructor, please bring $5 cash to class. Winsor Newton artist quality colours (tubes): Neutral Tint (gives you black and grey), Quinacridone Gold (mixing Gold with Prussian Blue gives our Green), Prussian Blue, Winsor Blue (Red Shade), Indian Yellow, Brown Madder (a darker red), Burnt Sienna (a warm brown), Burnt Umber (a middle brown), Sepia (a dark brown), Alizarine Crimson (a lighter red), Winsor Violet, Quinacridone Magenta

Masa paper, buy the sheet or buy pre-packaged (Art World has the pre-packaged masa paper in roughly letter size): If you buy by the sheet, with the long side towards you, FOLD the sheet right to left, then cut. Repeat with each of the two pieces. Again with the four pieces and you should have eight roughly smaller 8x10”pieces to work with. Repeat with the 8x10” pieces and you'll have the smaller pieces. Work on the rough side of the masa paper.

One toothbrush for creating special effects.

Ceramic or porcelain pallets or plates are better than plastic as a mixing surface. Can use old porcelain plates for this or buy the little porcelain/ceramic dishes from Chinatown. Let the paints you put out dry after each use. Cover to protect and you can reuse for a long time.

Regular Pencil for any tracing you want to do before painting

Absorbent Paper Towels (white ones are better)

Kneadable eraser (better than pinky rubber)

Chinese Paint Brushes are available from me ($15 each)
