Comox Valley Community Justice Centre presents

4th Annual Iona Campagnolo Lecture in Restorative Justice
Chief Justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin

For the very first time, the Chief Justice of Canada will be coming to the Comox Valley for a public lecture. This one-time event is part of the Community Justice Centre’s Iona Campagnolo Lectures in Restorative Justice.

The Rt. Hon. Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin has had a meteoric rise in the Canadian judiciary, culminating in her appointment as the first woman serving as Chief Justice in January, 2000. She has presided over the court during a period of very high activity and has written many of the recent landmark and ground-breaking decisions of the Supreme Court during this time. As she told the Globe & Mail, she hopes the Supreme Court will be remembered for “wise jurisprudence; jurisprudence that works and makes Canada a better place.”

Her presentation, at 7:30 PM on Thursday, February 26, 2015 in the Sid Williams Theatre, will be an incredibly rare opportunity to hear the Chief Justice speaking here in the Comox Valley about restorative justice and it’s place in the community.

The Campagnolo Lectures were established in honour of the 80th birthday The Hon. Iona Campagnolo, the Community Justice Centre’s Patron and Ambassador of Restorative Justice in 2012. They are part of the CJC’s public education program to enhance community understanding of the powerful work of restorative justice in our community. The lectures are completely open to the public.

Chief Justice McLachlin holds a B.A. (Honours) and MA in Philosophy, and an LL.B., all from the University of Alberta. She was called to the Alberta Bar in 1969 and to the British Columbia Bar in 1971 and practised law in Alberta and British Columbia. Commencing in 1974, she taught for seven years in the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia as a tenured Associate Professor. Her judicial career began in April 1981 when she was appointed to the Vancouver County Court. In September 1981, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. She was elevated to the British Columbia Court of Appeal in December of 1985 and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in September 1988. Seven months later, in April 1989, she was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. On January 7, 2000, she was appointed Chief Justice of Canada. She is the first woman in Canada to hold this position.

Reserved seating for the Campagnolo Lecture is limited, and those interested in attending are encouraged to get their tickets early.

Tickets may be picked up at the Sid Williams Theatre Ticket Centre at no charge. Tickets may also be ordered online through the Sid Williams Theatre website, but those ones will have a service fee of $2.00.
