The sixth meeting of the 16-17 academic year; the Department of Greek and Roman Studies welcomes Professor Sarah Levin-Richardson (Assistant Professor, University of Washington) who will present a lecture entitled, "Brothels and Prostitution at Pompeii."

According to Roman literature, brothels were dirty, smelly places hidden away on narrow alleyways, full of insatiable women and prowling men. This talk examines the reality of Roman prostitution, show casing a surprising world where clients wrote verses of Virgil's Aeneid on the walls of brothels, where prostitutes and clients drank and conversed together, and where slaves could temporarily act like free men.

The Classical Association of Vancouver Island is UVic’s organization for people interested in the Greek and Roman worlds. Monthly lectures by local and international scholars take place at UVic. Everyone is welcome.
