Candlelight Vigil – National Day of Remembrance and Action Against Gender-based Violence Saturday, December 6 | 4:30 PM | Maffeo Sutton / Sway’ A’ Lana Pavilion
The Nanaimo, Duncan & District Labour Council invites media and community members to a candlelight vigil marking the National Day of Remembrance and Action Against Gender Based Violence
This day commemorates the 14 women murdered at École Polytechnique in 1989 and recognizes ongoing gender-based violence in our communities.
Gender-based violence is pervasive in Canada and in British Columbia, with nearly 30% of women in British Columbia reporting experiencing physical or sexual assault from an intimate partner since the age of 15. https://www.unifor.org/news/all-news/bc-government-mandate-letter-acknowledges-epidemic-gender-based-violence
Local labour, community advocates, and allies will gather to honour lives lost, show solidarity, and call for meaningful action.
Photo/filming opportunities: speakers, candle lighting, community gathering.
