Victorias local talent is highlighted in a two-for-one CD release party, Nov. 2 at the Upper Deck Sports Lounge, when the Cal Batchelor Project and CURL release their new recordings.
Cal Batchelor is a bit of a legend, said Deb Rhymer, VBS board chair. He travelled all over Europe in the 70s and 80s, touring with Rod Stewart and gigging with Long John Baldry among others, and now hes settled in Victoria and put together a new, local band.
CURL is unique not only with their choice of material and well-crafted original songs, but because theyre the only all-female blues band in Victoria. This year at the Jazz Societys annual Blues Bash, they really impressed the audience, and were covered by CHEK TVan unexpected honour.
Originally from Victoria, Cal Batchelor moved to London, England in the 70s where he gigged and recorded with many British artists. He was a founding member of popular 70s band, Quiver, which was the first group to play at Rainbow Theatre in London (supporting The Who).
Recently settled back in Victoria, the Cal Batchelor Project, his latest band, features Paul Wainwright on sax, Dave Gray on drums, and Les Weiss on bass. Nov. 2 marks the release of their first CD.
CURL has been playing in Victoria for about ten years. In 2013 they headlined the Canada Day celebrations in Sooke; played the world famous Butchart Gardens; were featured at Victorias Dragon Boat Festival; and, capped off their year with an appearance at the Blues Bash.
CURL is Helen Davies on lead vocals and guitar, Dee Cooper on keyboards, Susan Johnson on bass and Christa Rossner on drums. The Nov. 2 event marks the release of their first CD, All My Fault.
VBS Juke Joint shows take place the first Saturday of every month. Along with performance, the VBS also promotes music education through workshops in partnership with Long and McQuade.
