Professors Emeriti, Faculty of Law
University of Victoria
The 800th anniversary of Magna Carta in 2015, marked internationally and locally — in a ceremony at Government House in Victoria, hosted by the UVic Faculty of Law, the University of British Columbia, the Law Society of British Columbia, and the Ministry of the Attorney General — was the occasion for much debate about the sense and sensibility of the Great Charter. Was it a "Good Thing," as some authors have unequivocally asserted? Did Clause 29 guarantee jury trial? Was Bad King John really bad, or simply misunderstood? Why is the Royal Proclamation of 1763 known in Canada as the Indigenous Magna Carta?
Join professors emeriti John McLaren and Hamar Foster for a thought-provoking talk on the myths and reality surrounding Magna Carta that will answer these and other questions.
Seating is limited — to guarantee a place, audience members should reserve tickets at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/cafe-historique-magna-carta-1215-2016-the-great-charter-then-and-now-tickets or phone 250-472-5484.
