Caf Scientifique The Digits of Pi
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
Lecture/discussion by Dr. Reinhard Illner (University of Victoria, Department of Mathematics and Statistics).
Is Mathematics true? It sounds a ridiculous question, but I will show a few examples (some of which include the digits of pi) which show that the matter deserves discussion. There is a lot of history behind it.
Mathematics is all good, bad and useful. Everybody could come up with examples. I'll challenge the audience to provide some and show some myself.
Mathematics is beautiful. I believe that its beauty is easy to see and will try to convince the audience.
The digits of PI arise in many likely and unlikely places. I will show this (I have a movie) and try to explain why this is so.
Finally, I will show "the most beautiful" equation of all (the Boltzmann equation) and talk about what is has to do with the arrow of time.
