Jazz contrabassist, singer and composer, Brandi Disterheft, has captivated audiences in Canada, Europe, Japan, China, Haiti and even the coveted Carnegie Hall. It’s not only her fiery bass playing that makes audiences stand-up and holler, but also her innovative live shows.
She sings in both English and French, showcasing her ambient and dreamy voice. Winning a Juno Award in 2008 for her album Debut (Superfran Records), Brandi is an acclaimed musician. She’s currently signed to Montreal’s Justin Time Records, recording with fellow Justin Time artists Oliver Jones and Hank Jones on the album Pleased to Meet You, which earned a Grammy in 2011. Disterheft has been under the apprenticeship of Miles Davis’ bassist, Ron Carter since she relocated to New York City from her hometown of North Vancouver. She’s also recorded with Benny Green on Anne Drummond’s album Revolving and with Cyrus Chestnut and Jeremy Pelt on Vincent Herring’s albums Uptown Shuffle and Night and Day. This talent is currently touring her fourth album Blue Canvas, featuring New York City’s legendary jazz pianist Harold Mabern and acclaimed drummer Joe Farnsworth.
The album is a collection of compositions that make immediate impact with eloquent instrumentals. The songs are a combination of Disterheft’s own compositions—including vocals as well as her recording debut on cello—and interpretations of classics by Clifford Brown, Tadd Dameron and other jazz greats. Blue Canvas is a timeless record. It’s a throwback to a vintage post-war approach, while simultaneously displaying the chemistry of three top-notch musicians.
