Author/Illustrator Joan Steacy presents: Tell The Stories Only You Could Tell In Comics!

Learn the language of visual storytelling, the exciting combination of words and pictures we enjoy as comics and graphic novels, with author/illustrator Joan Steacy. The focus for this hands-on workshop will be on personal stories—autobiographical, or memories of family and friends. Materials will be provided, so just bring your ideas!


Joan is a visual artist who has worked in a variety of disciplines including sculpture, traditional illustration, and digital imaging. She is the author/illustrator of So, That’s That!, a biography of her father who lived to be 100 years old. Her most recent work is Aurora Borealice, a triology of autobio/graphic novels which debuted at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival and was nominated for a Doug Wright Award. Joan teaches Comics & Graphic Novels at Camosun College, a visual storytelling program she co-created with her husband, author/illustrator Ken Steacy.

Learn the language of visual storytelling, the exciting combination of words and pictures we enjoy as comics and graphic novels, with author/illustrator Ken Steacy. The focus for this hands-on workshop will be stories of heroic fiction—super-hero, sci-fi, or fantasy. Materials will be provided, so just bring your ideas!


Ken decided at age eleven to become a professional comic book author/illustrator, a dream he realized in 1974. Since, he has worked in the industry as writer, artist, art director, editor, and publisher, chronicling the exploits of Astro Boy, Spider-Man, Harry Potter, and the Star Wars gang, to name a few. He has collaborated with other writers, including Harlan Ellison and Douglas Coupland. He is the recipient of an Eisner and an Inkpot award, and in 2009 was inducted into the Canadian Comic Book Hall of Fame, a lifetime achievement award for contributions to the industry. Ken teaches Comics & Graphic Novels at Camosun College in Victoria BC, a visual storytelling program he co-created with his wife, author/illustrator Joan Steacy.
