Helen Webster, the author of MEDICAL MAN will read an excerpt from and sign copies of the book.
MEDICAL MAN tells the story of T. Robert Ross, MDCM, Queen's University, 1904-08, as his skills, knowledge, ingenuity and courage allow him to overcome the vast prairie distances, early 20th century communication and transportation, and the ravages of the Great Depression and two world wars, using medical technology that is archaic by modern standards.
MEDICAL MAN grew out of the real-life journals and medical stories of Dr. T. Robert Ross. The son of a Hudson's Bay trader, he was already managing his own HBC post in the wilds of northern Ontario by the age of seventeen. Always restless, always seeking new adventures, he left that life behind when, in his early thirties, he decided to study medicine at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
Then, newly minted medical degree in hand he packed up his young family and immigrated to Alberta in 1909. As a pioneer doctor, Robert practiced medicine in Bow Island, Lethbridge, Coleman, and Drumheller, Alberta. He established himself as an innovative physician and surgeon over a five decade long medical career spanning a time of remarkable discoveries in an era often called "the golden age of medicine.'"
