Join Vancouver Island-based researchers, Richard Beamish and Gordon McFarlane, as well as several other contributors, as they celebrate the release of their new book, The Sea Among Us: The Amazing Strait of Georgia (Harbour Publishing). Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. Books will be available for purchase.

In The Sea Among Us, twelve expert contributors come together to present the first book that is a comprehensive study of the Strait of Georgia in all its aspects. With chapters on fish, marine mammals, geology, oceanography, birds, history of settlement and of industry, among others, it is the function of this book to inform British Columbians about the Strait of Georgia. As editor Richard Beamish says, “All authors hope that the readers will use the information to ask questions about how the Strait of Georgia is coping with change and how they can provide more of the information that is needed to maintain a healthy Strait of Georgia.”

As well as multitudes of colour photographs, maps and diagrams, The Sea Among Us features brand new scientific information. Covering everything from tsunami modelling to First Nations history to barnacle reproduction, this book is a must for anyone interested in the health of the Strait of Georgia. All author royalties from this book are being donated to the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

Richard Beamish has a PhD in Zoology from the University of Toronto and has worked with numerous research organizations. He is the recipient of the Prix D’Excellence, the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals, the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia. He was also a member of the International Panel on Climate Change that received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Gordon McFarlane spent 30 years as a researcher at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo. He was a member and advisor to numerous international negotiating teams and participated in the development and conduct of a number of international research programs. He has authored more than 200 publications concerning the biology and assessment of marine resources.

The book’s other distinguished contributors include John Clague, Richard Thomson, Paul Harrison, David Mackas, Rick Harbo, Andrew Trites, Douglas Bertram, Terry Glavin, Stewart Muir and Jacquelynne King.
