Join Vancouver Island author Rick M. Harbo for a lecture on his new book, Pacific Reef and Shore: A Photo Guide to Northwest Marine Life, Revised Second Edition (Harbour Publishing, $12.95) as part of the Courtenay and District Museum's lecture series.
Doors open at 6:30pm. Books will be available for sale through the Museum Store, and the event will also feature a book signing after the talk. In Harbo's easy-to-use pocket guide, released just in time for beach season, readers will find a comprehensive overview of Pacific marine life, including everything from whales and seals to oysters, crabs, nudibranchs and seaweeds.
The talk will feature colourful slides showcasing many of the sea and shore life in the book—including the abundant marine species found in the Strait of Georgia and on Vancouver Island's many beaches.
Pacific Reef and Shore has been updated with new species, up-to-date scientific information and many brilliant photographs of more than 300 common plants and animals found in the intertidal zone off the coast of North America. Each entry includes a description summary with information on size and habitat, and a photo for species verification, giving readers an overview of local sea life without weighing them down as they explore the shore.
Rick M. Harbo, B.Sc., is one of the Pacific Northwest’s leading marine writers and photographers. Author of the bestselling Tidepool and Reef, The Edible Seashore, Guide to the Western Seashore and Shells and Shellfish of the Pacific Northwest, and the award-winning book Whelks to Whales (Harbour, 1999, 2011),
Harbo is a diver and a retired senior marine biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. He is currently a Research Associate at the Royal BC Museum. Harbo lives in Nanaimo, BC.
