Blackwork/Scarletwork: Embroidery as Contemporary Art
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
Blackwork/Scarletwork is a week-long (5 day) workshop that focuses on blackwork & scarletwork embroidery as an experimental method of contemporary mark-making. The names blackwork & scarletwork come from the colour of the thread: blackwork is when black thread stitched on usually a white or neutral surface, often by a process involving counting the threads of the surface fabric; and scarletwork refers to the use of red thread.
This workshop focuses on small individual blackwork & scarletwork pieces that could contribute to a larger collaborative work. Invited guest artists working with contemporary craft and embroidery will give short presentations during the workshop for a source of inspiration. Topics covered in the workshop include: the history of blackwork embroidery, basic blackwork and scarletwork techniques, exploration of experimental techniques and introduction to artists working in contemporary embroidery. No sewing experience necessary.
