This year’s Black History Month Concert will feature The Maureen Washington Quartet and Playwright / Actor Justin Carter.
Act – 1: – Justin Carter’s one man show portrays Mifflin Gibbs as he reminisces on the trials, tribulations, and successes as one of Victoria, BC’s first black community members. Victoria’s first and only black Deputy Mayor, Mifflin Gibbs became an important part of establishing the city of Victoria during his ten year stay which began around 1858.
Act – 2: – The Maureen Washington Quartet – always delivers a thrilling, energetic and soulful performance of jazz, blues, and gospel. She has won several awards including being named 2014 Black Canadian Awards Best Jazz and Soul Artist. She is backed by three of Victoria’s finest musicians: (Karel Roessingh – piano, Joey Smith – bass, and Damian Graham – drums.)
