Manuel Axel Strain, a 2-spirit interdisciplinary artist with Musqueam/Simpcw/Syilx heritage, will start off the event with a gift exchange and performance centered around the Millstone River. Their performance will be followed by a reading by S F Ho from their novella George the Parasite, about aliens, love, and boundaries. The event will be capped off with a reading from Griffin Poetry prize winner Billy-Ray Belcourt of the Driftpile Cree Nation in northern Alberta. Billy-Ray's most recent title, A History of My Brief Body is a memoir that focuses on grief, colonial violence, joy, love and queerness.
This event will appeal to Two-Spirit and Indigenous queer communities, as well as general LGBTQ+ and Indigenous communities, and to fiction, poetry, and nonfiction writers and readers.
This event is part of the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s huli u’tu staluẃ / Riverbed Project. This series of artworks, walks, performances, readings, and workshops will move upstream on the Millstone River with events from July to October.
