Since meeting in Vancouver in 1994, François Houle and Benoît Delbecq have since performed many times in Canada, the USA, and in Europe.
The two musicians have been garnering attention and awards for several years, including Benoît's winning the “Grand Prix du Disque”, the French equivalent to the Junos. Since their CD “Dice Thrown”, won Best Jazz Album of 2002 by Jazzman Magazine, The duo's performances include performances at the Ottawa Jazz Festival, Montreal Off Festival, and San Francisco, where they performed for the Consulate General of France, Sons d’Hiver, La muse en circuit, Victoriaville, Vancouver, Toronto, and a tour of Switzerland and the Netherlands.
Born in 1966, Parisian pianist Benoît Delbecq figures today among the innovators of the international contemporary jazz scene. His reputation and influence have been growing steadily since the early 90’s, and the New York Times recently described him as “an original and unconventional pianist” who “expertly” invents a “serene” music. Benoît performs solo piano and solo electronics, leads or co-leads a number of bands from duos to quintets, and is involved in many multi-disciplinary productions of theatre, dance, the visual arts, cinenat, etc. His music features mesmerizing grooves that shake you flashing, lunar melodies.
An invitation to a “voyage into a magic land” (Le Monde) Clarinetist François Houle has established himself as one of Canada’s finest musicians, in all of the diverse musical spheres he embraces: classical, jazz, new music, improvised music, and world music. He is a leader in Vancouver’s music community and considered by many to be Canada’s leading exponent of the clarinet.
Houle has been one of the major musical figures on the BC scene for the last 26 years. A West Coast Music Awards and Juno Awards nominee, François has released more than a dozen recordings of his own music on Canadian labels such as Drip Audio, Spool, Songlines, Red Toucan, as well as Germany’s between-the-lines label. In 1998 and 2004 he was listed by Downbeat magazine as “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition.”
