Beer & Burger in support of Cory Johnson

On Sunday, July 29, a special beer & burger event is being held from 4 - 9 pm at Pipers Neighbourhood Pub to help raise funds to accommodate some new mobility challenges for a Nanaimo man.

Cory Johnson, a husband and father, had a large benign tumour removed from his spinal cord in March. Sadly, as a result, he has lost mobility from the waist down.

Mel Johnson, Cory's wife, says Cory's attitude during all of this has been one of strength and thankfulness. He is thankful that he was able to get one of the best neurosurgeons in Canada, is at the best rehab place in Western Canada, and that he has such amazing support from family and friends.
The costs the Johnson family face are high and Cory will be unable to return to his job as a tow truck driver. The wheelchair Cory requires will cost between $5000 - $7000 and medical benefits will only cover $1000 of this. House renovations to add a porch lift and wheelchair accessible washroom will cost approximately $30,000. Cory also needs a commode chair, bath seat, and driver rehab training.

We have tried to gain financial support from different organizations and government agencies to no avail, says Mel. In the meantime, the Johnson family has hosted a bottle drive and 2 garage sales to raise funds. But this effort has only made a small dent in the mounting costs they will incur.

The evening will feature a silent auction, 50/50 draw, and door prizes. Ticket holders will have a choice between a beef, chicken, and veggie burger for their meal and between beer and house red or white wine for their drink.
All proceeds from this event will go toward the Johnson family to help accommodate Cory's new mobility challenges.
