Hip Hop duo LightningCloud - Crystle Lightning and MC RedCloud are the creators, writers and directors of this re-mastered Indigenous twist on the classic musical.
Bear Grease features all the familiar characters — Sandy, Rizzo and Danny - but each character is given Indigenous influences to make all the elements of the story their own.
The music maintains the original’s '50s style, but drums and flutes are added to demonstrate more traditional cultural aspects with a dash of hip hop thrown in to appeal to younger audiences.
Bear Grease was developed by Crystle Lightning and her husband MC Redcloud as a way to celebrate their identity, in spaces where they felt Indigenous representation was excluded, but Bear Grease is not just for Indigenous people. The show has received rave reviews from non-Indigenous audiences all over North America.
