BARGAINS, BACH AND BOOK FEST !
If you are an avid book reader, lover of author readings and classical music, you definitely need to be on Salt Spring Island for these great events!
Islanders already know how wonderful Salt Spring Literacys annual fundraiser, The Giant Book Sale, is with over 15,000 books sorted into over 35 categories. Prices range from fifty cents to three dollars, with special books individually priced. This takes place over three days at the Farmers Institute.
This year we have partnered with the Salt Spring Arts Council to expand the fun to include a full day of book-related events and classical music at Mahon Hall, 114 Rainbow Rd., on Saturday, November 16th. There will be readings from authors Arthur Black, C.C. Humphreys and Patrick Taylor, a playlette and skits by the Readers Theatre and a fascinating display of books on book art from the former owners of Watermark Books. As an added attraction, a group of students from GISS will be presenting their own original poetry.
Just to top it off, we are incredibly fortunate to have world-renowned cellist Michael Jones perform Bach and other works at Mahon Hall that day. For those of you who have read The Cello Suites by Eric Siblin, (and if you havent and love Bach, you must read it) you will be interested to know that Michael has recorded the complete Bach Suites for solo cello on a 1667 Stradivarius Violoncello for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
So come over to Salt Spring, start your holiday shopping at the Giant Book Sale, spend the night at one of the islands B&Bs http://saltspringaccommodation.ca/and take in all the wonderful events at Mahon Hall the next day. For lovers of books and Bach, its a weekend not to be missed!
Salt Spring Literacy is supported by Decoda Literacy Solutions and is made possible through funding from the Ministry of Education.
