It has become a tradition for the Victoria Baroque Players in collaboration with St John's Chamber Choir to perform a concert of sacred music by Johann Sebastian Bach around the time of Holy Week. Now for the fourth year they offer a selection of works in tune with the Passiontide and Easter in a concert on Saturday April 5th, 7:30pm, at the Church of St John the Divine.

The programme includes Bach's magnificent motet Jesu Meine Freude paired with sacred works by Dieterich Buxtehude. Bach's motets are elaborate choral works full of imaginative counterpoint, tonal colour, and word painting. Based on a well-known Lutheran hymn, the motet 'Jesu meine Freude' for five-part choir takes the listeners through many moods from drama and anguish to a soothing and optimistic outlook.

Bach was a great fan of Buxtehude and famously walked from Arnstadt to Lbeck, a total of 250 miles, to hear Buxtehude improvise on the the organ. Buxtehude, by some 40 years Bach's senior, also wrote a setting of 'Jesu Meine Freude', his version calling for for two sopranos and bass, which will be sung by sopranos Emma Hannan and Eve Richardson, and Vancouver-based baritone Steven Blanger. As is typical of Buxtehude's vocal works, there are beautifully-incorporated graceful instrumental interludes with the choral parts. Hannan and Richardson are no strangers to VBP/St John's concerts, and are quickly establishing reputations as sensitive and musical soloists. Blanger is a well-established figure on the Vancouver early music scene and regularly performs in the Early Music Vancouver Series and with the Vancouver Chamber Choir.

On the programme will also be Buxtehude's uplifting cantata 'Alles was ihr tut', and Bach's French-influenced Suite in B minor for solo flute and strings, with the VBP's artistic director, Soile Stratkauskas, as flute soloist. The twenty-six members of the St John's Chamber Singers, conducted by David Stratkauskas, include many professional musicians and advanced voice students.

The concert takes place in the beautiful Church of St John the Divine, an atmospheric and inspiring setting for Baroque music and sacred works.
