Wednesday, May 21st, AV Transition Town Society 6pm meeting, 7-9pm Local Energy Public Forum
Recent hikes in rates by BC Hydro and the controversy about the creation of a vast infrastructure for the harvesting and marketing on liquid natural gas have brought to the fore a need to look at local initiatives to produce and distribute energy, which, though limited, may provide some relief from price spikes and build emergency capacity were the Valley to encounter another catastrophe on the order of the 1964 tsunami. If we add concerns over the transport of fossil fuels, what with the myriad pipeline spills and the derailments in Lac Mgantic and more recently in Maryland and Virginia, it would seem all the more appropriate for the citizens of Port Alberni and the surrounding area to look at proposals for building local energy capacity and examining just how we use the energy we have at our disposal. There will be a series of short presentations by speakers with some knowledge of both the field and the local community, followed by an open space exchange of comment and ideas. There is no charge for admission and all members of the public are welcome to attend and to have a say on a vitally important topic. http://alberni.ca/events/9421
