Meet local author and military historian Mark Zuehlke as he signs copies of the newest book in his critically acclaimed Canadian Battle Series —Forgotten Victory: First Canadian Army and the Cruel Winter of 1944-45 (Douglas & McIntyre)—in Victoria. The signing will take place at Bolen Books (#111-1644 Hillside Ave) on Saturday, December 13 from 1pm to 2:30pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Forgotten Victory relates the untold story of how the Canadian Army paved the way for an Allied victory in Europe in World War II through an attack against the Rhineland. Involving over 100,000 Canadian and British troops, the Rhineland Campaign was the first major Northwest Europe Allied offensive of 1945 and the war’s last great battle in the west. It was particularly vicious, and many lives were needlessly wasted through ill-considered tactics, hasty attacks, and inadequate support. Yet it resulted in a decisive victory, at the end of which there was no doubt as to the war’s ultimate outcome.
