The Aurora Piano Trio has been praised for its passion, exuberance, lyricism and sensational performances. Violinist Yuel Yawney and cellist, Sungyong Lim, members of the Borealis String Quartet, joined with acclaimed pianist, Libby Yu, to form Canada’s most exciting new ensemble, the Aurora Piano Trio. Each of the Trio’s members has performed around the world and brings their extensive chamber music experience together, creating an ensemble of the highest calibre.
Founded in 2019 and mentored by the late, great Canadian impresario, George Zukerman, the Trio has garnered much critical acclaim and is taking the Canadian music scene by storm. In 2022, the Trio performed at the Music by the Sea Festival, receiving standing ovations. Vancouver pianist Libby Yu is recognized internationally as an accomplished performer, collaborator, teacher and adjudicator. She captured the First Prize of the 27th CBC Radio National Competition for Young Performers. A favourite with audiences, Libby has graced international stages and has appeared as soloist with major symphony orchestras Yuel Yawney, violinist, has performed extensively in Canada, the United States and the Czech Republic, where he completed his advanced training at the Prague Academy with Joseph Suk. He also studied at the Harid Conservatory in Florida and at Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Texas. Frequently appearing as soloist and chamber musician, he has been heard at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, the Banff Summer Festival, Domaine Forget and the Scotia Festival.
Cellist, Sungyong Lim, graduated with honors from the renowned Yewon School and the Seoul School of the Arts before entering the Korea National University of Arts. Among his many musical achievements, Sungyong has received accolades from the DAAD (Deutdcher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) and from his performance at the German Chamber Music Competition. Sungyong has also concertized as an outstanding artist in international music festivals. He currently teaches at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and since 2015, he has been a member of the Borealis String Quartet.
