Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead tells a story of two minor characters from Hamlet, highlighting the fundamental incomprehensibility of the world with his typical witty existential repartee. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern spend the entirety of the play in total confusion, lacking even such basic information as their own identities. The play ultimately suggests that the prominent role of chance in our lives, coupled with the difficulty of discerning the true intentions and desires of other people, leads to almost paralyzing confusion. It is also very funny. Stoppard borrows heavily from Shakespeare, not only re-imagining the play�s plot but also quoting directly from Hamlet whenever his Rosencrantz and Guildenstern characters speak to Claudius, Gertrude, Hamlet, or Polonius.
