Part of the 19th Annual InFrinGinG Dance Fesitval, 2017 A showing of a work in progress by Samantha Letourneau, Holly Bright and facilitated with the public by Lee Se Feh of Battery Opera.
The work is a physical exploration of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and in particular General Recommendation 19 that speaks directly about violence against women. This piece is being developed as part of Samantha's post project for the Women’s Human Rights Education Institute( WHRI) housed in the the University of Toronto. WHRI accepts 20 women yearly to explore and learn about “important milestones such as the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), and the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples” . http://learnwhr.org/

Bio: Samantha Letourneau has been working in human rights and the arts for over 15 years. Through using art as a tool in examining complex issues, Letourneau works with communities to address systemic racism, discrimination and trauma. Samantha holds a Masters in Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University focusing on arts and transformative learning, a BA in Global Studies from Vancouver Island University, contemporary dance training from UK/ Canadian choreographer Clare Cunningham and a Diploma in the Performing Arts from the School of Sudanese music and dance in Indonesia. She was the recipient of the Marie Gillen award in 2015 for her master’s research that focused on the outcome of using art engagement when working with women learners impacted by abuse. Her research has led to the development of innovative arts based community programming in partnership with various not for- profits.
