Visionary, prophet, mirror, rebel; what role do artists play in society? This class will track the changing role of the artist in Western Art from mere imitator in Ancient Greece to portraitist of Rococo high society to social critic in the 20th century. Artists discussed will include Phidias, Durer, Gentileschi, Daumier, Van Gogh and, of course, Duchamp.
