This course focuses on the early development of abstraction starting from Turner, Monet and Matisse in the 19th century to Malevich and Mondrian in the early 20th century. Mid-century abstraction develops into abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, colour field, pattern and decoration, minimalism and conceptualism. Ambiguous abstraction, a term developed in the late-20th century will also be discussed as well as a global perspective of how abstraction has been used throughout the world. This course will give you a deep understanding into the history of abstraction and its role in how we think about art today. Course includes lectures, discussion as well as hands-on art projects.
