About Shin Hanga

Traditional ukiyo-e prints had all but disappeared in Japan by the early 20th century. Many were anxious to find a replacement, and their efforts resulted in shin hanga, or the New Print Movement. These artists wanted to build on the foundations of the ukiyo-e school, appropriating new designs and subjects from the modern age. They preserved the tradition of working in teams, which included an artist, an engraver, a printer and sometimes a publisher to produce prints that incorporated the classic ukiyo-e subjects such as beautiful women, kabuki actors, and landscapes. Once considered popular commercial products, these prints are now highly collectible and often surpass the value of ukiyo-e prints.

The AGGV has the finest and most comprehensive collection of shin hanga in Canada. This exhibition includes many new acquisitions with prints by shin hanga masters Hiroshi Yoshida, Kawase Hasui, Tsuchiya Koitsu, Hashiguchi Goyo, Ito Shinsui, among others.
