As one of Canada’s most renowned artists, Carr is famous not only for her stunning landscapes, but also for her reputation as a nomadic, solitary artist. Emily Carr and the Young Generation celebrates a new vision of the iconic Victoria artist as both mentor and teacher, lending ideas and influence to a new generation of local artists.
During the 1930s and 1940s, Carr’s studio became a destination for young Victoria artists who sought her for instruction, mentorship and conversation. While the older artist’s relationships were often complex and sometimes tense, Carr’s impact on their work is undeniable.
Experience the revered painter’s work alongside the work of this new generation, including work from Ina D.D. Uhthoff, Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher, Max Maynard, Myfanwy Pavelic and Jack Shadbolt.
