Art Deco fashions put the sparkle in history at the Nanaimo Museum. Join Ivan Sayers, fashion historian, for a lecture on Art Deco clothing in the 1920s and 1930s. Registration is full for the lecture on Tuesday, June 18 but limited spaces are still available on Saturday, June 29 from 2pm-4pm.

Ivan Sayers has curated several exhibits on the history of fashion at the Nanaimo Museum over the years and his presentations are always popular with the community. �The first Art Deco lecture sold out within a few weeks of the exhibit opening,� says Aimee Greenaway, Program Coordinator at the Nanaimo Museum. �Ivan Sayers is an entertaining speaker and his lectures appeal to both people who love fashion and those interested in history.� The lecture, The Lost & Found: Sex Appeal in Women�s Fashions 1920s & 1930s, highlights the influence of the Art Deco era�s trends of simplicity and youthfulness, drawing inspiration from geometric shapes and Egyptian culture.

The Art Deco fashion exhibit includes over 25 garments and accessories. Pieces were selected from the collections of guest curators, Ivan Sayers and Claus Jahnke, the Nanaimo Museum and other private collections. �Visitors to exhibit have remarked on the luxurious fabrics and beadwork on the dresses,� says Greenaway, �Many of the dresses have great stories behind them such as the coat buttons shaped like Aladdin�s lamp that were designed by world-renowned artist Salvadore Dali and a classic Chanel little black dress.�

The exhibit runs from May 9th to August 6th and an exhibit catalogue is available for purchase at the museum�s gift shop.

Limited seating is available for the Ivan Sayers lecture on Saturday, June 29 from 2pm-4pm. Pre-registration is required and the cost is $10 per person.
