Responding to rapid changes and new possibilities inherent in the presentation of time-based art works, internationally acclaimed media art festival Antimatter opens this October 14th, with an enlarged component of expanded cinema performance as well as public art installations. The 19th edition of Antimatter [media art] will allow Victoria audiences to experience more than 160 single channel video and film works from 30+ countries.
Held over 15 days, Antimatter features 20 curated programs of short-form film and video — the majority World or Canadian premieres and all new to Victoria audiences. Deluge Contemporary Art will be the venue for all screenings as well as four performance events: Cleopatra and the Nile (Victoria), Apparitions by Alex MacKenzie (Vancouver), Jeremy Rourke’s (San Francisco) walk long inside upon your land and the sound/image improvisations of living is mostly wasting time by Michaela Grill (Austria) and Sophie Trudeau (Montreal).
The group exhibition kernel panic will be open to the public during the day at Deluge, Victoria native Brandon Poole’s exhibition The Principle of Original Horizontality will be on view at the fifty fifty arts collective and Danial Laskarin’s audio sculpture to know a thing can be experienced at the Ministry of Casual Living’s window in Odeon Alley. The public video installations Cleopatra Burst and 117711 can be seen in the transom window of Deluge and the window of the adjacent Legacy Gallery after dusk.
In addition to screenings, performances and installations, Antimatter host media salons during the festival, informal and open forums where member of the public can engage with visiting and local artists and festival organizers.
All screenings and performances are priced on a sliding scale; exhibitions and installations are free to the public.
