10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

The Burnside Gorge Community Association is hosting the annual Gorge Waterway Clean-up on Saturday  September 27 from 10am – 12pm. Volunteers are invited to join in the clean-up efforts to remove garbage and debris from Victoria’s Gorge Waterway and shoreline areas. Volunteer scuba divers, paddlers, and SUPers are also invited to help retrieve garbage from the water.

The Gorge Waterway Clean-up is part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up, an international initiative to clean up shorelines around the world.  This year’s event is the 14th annual clean-up coordinated by Burnside Gorge.  Since 2000, thousands of volunteers have removed tons of trash from local shorelines and water, preserving wildlife habitat and restoring the pristine beauty of the inner Gorge Waterway. The event is also a great community builder that promotes environmental awareness and stewardship, with people of all ages and walks of life participating.  Clean-up efforts have had such an impact that the once polluted waterway has recently seen a resurgence of public swimming, celebrated in the annual Gorge Swimfest.

Volunteers meet at Selkirk Green Park on Waterfront Crescent, in the Selkirk Waterfront area, and Victoria Harbour Ferry will transport teams of volunteers to clean-up locations along the shoreline. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own boots, gloves and wheelbarrows; a limited number are available to borrow at the event.

The Gorge Waterway Clean-up is organized by the Burnside Gorge Community Association with support from the Capital Regional District, Tim Hortons, Ellice Recycle, Victoria Harbour Ferry and 98.5 the Ocean/103.1 JACK FM.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering for this event can contact Suzette Delmage, Community Recreation Coordinator, at 250-388-5251 or [email protected]. This is a great volunteer initiative for school and corporate teams, families, and those who care about the environment.
