An Evening of Newfoundland Folk Song and Storytelling

Author/singer Tim Rogers will be performing a “one man show” based on his
book “The Mystery of the SS Southern Cross”. The performance includes
readings from his recent book, stories and singing a number of
Newfoundland songs from the times.
Tim’s book is a fictional account of the tragic and mysterious sinking of
the SS Southern Cross off of Newfoundland’s southeast coast in 1914. He
became intrigued by this story while studying folklore and music of
Newfoundland. After finding several ballads about the sealing ship’s
disappearance he wrote a number of academic articles about the event and
its devastating human toll (173 crew members were lost at sea). But
Rogers says, “These articles failed to quell the growing need to tell the
human side of this great story.” His novel intertwines the vibrant
pre-war Newfoundland setting with the rich and complex events that led to
this great tragedy, while honouring the memory of her gallant crew.
An accomplished musician with a strong interest in Canada’s folk music,
Rogers will perform songs drawn from Newfoundland tradition that touch on
the times and setting of the book. A music CD accompanies the book.
The performance will take place on Thursday, July 16 at 7:00PM in
Auditorium A of the SHOAL Centre, 10030 Resthaven Drive, Sidney. Tickets
are $10, available at Tanner’s Books in Sidney, Munro’s Books in Victoria
and at the door. The performance is a fundraiser in support of the 2015
Sidney and Peninsula Literary Festival.
