"Evans and Hall created 2 masterpiece albums that continue to thrill, entice and inspire. Rob and I owe a debt of gratitude to these fine musicians, and hope to rekindle some of the magic through our own interpretations of their music.Bill Evans and Jim Hall are two of my all time favourite musicians! As a teen growing up in Victoria, my desert island vinyl were generally albums that involved these two artists. To hear the two of them performing together is a mind blowing, soul satisfying experience!
I had the distinct pleasure of working with bassist/composer Chuck Israels for many years."Playing with Miles reminds me of playing with Bill". Chuck worked with Bill Evans, Jim Hall and many others, and he really helped to provide me with a genuine insight into a deeper level of playing and focus in jazz that was based on the aesthetics he garnered from working with so many greats.
Guitarist Rob Cheramy and I began playing together when I was 15, and he's always been very supportive of my efforts. I really relate to his musicality and sense of humour. I'm looking forward to joining Rob once again at Hermann's Jazz Club. I am truly grateful that Keith and Catherine Allison are once again making this event possible. These two have been 'in my corner' for as long as I can remember."
Miles Black
"I met Miles about thirty years ago,at our Ray Brown bass workshop at Allison Piano,on Government Street. There were a small handful of lucky musicians there that day. A young Rob Cheramy was there and a few other guitar players and bass players, listening to every word. He said "You should all be able to play it on the piano because then you know you understand how the music was put together."Ray Brown
I have watched Miles become one of the most artistic, versatile and sensitive band leaders and consider him one of the finest jazz musicians. He is the 'go to' man at the keys when saxophonist Houston Person comes to town.
I hear Bill Evans,Oscar Peterson,Monty Alexander,Count Basie,Duke Ellington, George Shearing and all the greats in Miles's playing.
Miles tastefully adds his sense of time and harmony, to his innovative jazz improvisations; his accompanying with fellow musicians is well respected by his peers.
I have learned so much from Miles and he continues to inspire my own piano playing.
Rob Cheramy amazes me with his virtuoso guitar abilities and it is a rare opportunity to hear the interplay between these two West Coast artists playing the music of Bill Evans & Jim Hall.
The night will be exquisite and memorable."
Keith Allison
One of the West Coasts best jazz guitarists, Rob is also southern Vancouver Islands busiest guitar teacher. Rob has accompanied such legends as Tommy Banks, Herb Ellis and Paul Horn, and his playing and composing have received acclaim on recordings by Gordon Clements and Roy Reynolds.
"Miles Black continues to uplift my spirit with his piano artistry." Louise Rose
I hope you can join us for a night of great jazz.
