Opening: Thursday, October 8, 5:30 - 7:30pm The View Gallery presents "African Scrapbook: Paintings by Maureen G. Marshall: (October 8-November 13, 2015). A series of twenty-nine paintings by Maureen G. Marshall, based on the “sketches, masks, carvings, and memories of her travel experiences.” (African Scrapbook: Maureen G. Marshall, 2014).

The works engage in the postcolonial discourse through the mixing of past/present, colour/form, self/other, African/European themes in their making, and in their final appearance. Marshall studied anthropology and art at UC Berkeley, and has long remained interested in the intellectual and emotive power of African carvings. English-born, B.C.-bred, Maureen G. Marshall served in the Canadian Army during World War II, before marrying and raising a daughter in California.

She studied and practiced painting, becoming an important figure in the San Francisco and Women’s Art scene during the 1970s and 80s. She currently lives in Qualicum Beach, B.C. The View Gallery is pleased to partner with the Vancouver Island University Foundation to bring about this exhibition, and is thankful to the artist for her generous donation to Vancouver Island University.
