Indulge in the sounds of the finest Canadian guitarists of African origin. Their debut CD, African Guitar Summit, was honoured with a Juno as the World Music Album of the Year at the 2005 Juno Awards. Their second album, African Guitar Summit II, garnered a 2007 Juno award nomination in the same category.
African Guitar Summit was released on CBC Records in November 2004. The group performed at the Juno Awards Gala in Winnipeg on April 2, 2005. They have since toured across Canada, including a performance at the Live 8 concert in Barrie, near Toronto.
This star-studded collective unites the talents of 9 musicians, each an expert in their individual style and together creating musical magic with African Guitar Summit. Experience live this superb and unique achievement for African music; the mix of musicians who are distinct in cultural backgrounds and languages yet sharing stories and singing each other’s praises, the inspiration of these skilled hands and voices joined in common to reach the summit…A truly incredible experience!
In three days they created a band, rehearsing and arranging, sharing stories and experiences. On the fourth day the group debuted in a concert at CBC’s Glenn Gould Studio. It was a magical evening that will be long remembered by everyone who was there, full of dazzling individual showcases and electrifying collaborations. The following three days were spent in CBC Studio 211 recording their self-titled CD. Everything was recorded live off the floor, in one or two takes.
African Guitar Summit features: from Guinea, the smooth fire of Juno Award winner Alpha YaYa Diallo and the master balafon player Nabi Kamara; from Ghana the heartbeat of drummer Kofi Ackah, the golden voice of Theo Boakye and the master guitar player Pa Joe; from Kenya, the Fiesta guitar of Professor Adam Solomon; from Burundi/Rwanda, the bluesy Mighty Popo; from Madagascar the thoughtful composer, powerful vocalist and sublime guitar player Donné Roberts and the blues guitar master Madagascar Slim.
