Accord Baroque Ensemble is Pat Unruh, viola da gamba and Monica Kim, harpsichord. Monica and Pat are long-time music companions, playing viola da gamba and harpsichord as a duo, with concert repertoires from the Renaissance and Baroque. They are resident musicians for the period dance-group, The Historical Performance Ensemble of Vancouver, and have arranged and performed music for period theatre.

The programme they will perform for Salt Spring Baroque features exhilarating sonatas for viol and obbligato harpsichord, arranged by J.S. Bach from works he had written for other instrumental combinations. As ever with Bach’s music, we can enjoy the intricate interplay of melodies that weave and exchange with each other, the viol singing out between the higher and lower sound-registers of the harpsichord. The movements in these sonatas reveal Bach’s use of Italianate and French styles. To provide a taste of this latter French influence, they will also be playing music by some of Bach’s French contemporaries.
