The Association of Canadian Women Composers will join forces with women’s chorus Ensemble Laude and the Emily Carr String Quartet for a capital celebration of the bill being passed to grant limited suffrage to women.
The concert features music by Canadian women from the seventeenth century onward with an emphasis on composers from British Columbia. While the concert will be a celebration, it will also serve as a reminder that the struggle for women’s equality is still not over.
The Association of Canadian Women Composers/L'association des femmes compositeurs canadiennes is an incorporated professional organization for women composers in Canada. It actively promotes music written by Canadian women, helps women composers achieve a higher profile in the community, and seeks to educate the public in Canada and abroad about music written by women. It is a not-for-profit collective.
The Ensemble Laude, directed by Elizabeth MacIsaac, is a vibrant community choir of over 50 vocalists, committed to expanding choral repertoire for women’s voices by regularly commissioning new Canadian works.
The Emily Carr String Quartet has performed in the US, Europe and Asia, and their CD Hidden Treasure was nominated for the 2012 classical recording of the year at the Western Canadian Music Awards.
We are committed to making A Spirit Indomitable a concert not to be missed, one which sheds new light on the achievements of women in the past and inspires BC women to even greater achievements in the future though the artistic excellence of our featured composers, the Ensemble Laude, and the Emily Carr String Quartet.
